Equine sociality — the evolved social organisation of the horse as a species, characterised by stable, bonded herd groups with long-term relationships, clear social hierarchies maintained through low-level affiliative behaviour, mutual grooming, sentinel behaviour, and the continuous physical proximity of known companions. Equine sociality is not socialisation (a training concept) and not merely 'turnout with other horses'. It is a biological architecture for which the horse's social brain, stress-regulatory system, and nervous system are specifically organised.
The horse evolved in stable multi-generation herd groups with complex, enduring social relationships. Individual horses form preferential bonds — 'best friends' — with specific companions, and research shows that these bonds have measurable physiological effects: horses in proximity to their preferred companion show lower heart rate, lower cortisol, and lower stress indicators than horses with strangers or without companions, even when housed adjacently rather than in contact. The identity of the companion matters. The duration and stability of the relationship matters.
Modern equestrian management typically provides social contact of a kind, but often in conditions that are biologically inadequate. Horses kept in individual stalls with visual access to neighbours are not living socially — they can see other horses, which activates the social system, but cannot engage in the affiliative behaviours (grooming, proximity, mutual vigilance) that constitute its function. Group turnout in frequently changing groups does not replicate the stable herd: horses in unstable groups spend significant energy on social negotiation rather than on the affiliative behaviours associated with welfare benefit.
The welfare implications of social inadequacy extend beyond loneliness. The horse's stress-regulatory system evolved in a social context. In the wild, a companion's calm behaviour signals safety; a companion's alertness signals threat. The social system is partly a threat-assessment system. A horse managed in isolation, or in unstable social groups, loses access to this regulation — it must evaluate every stimulus alone, without the social information that would, in evolutionary terms, be its primary safety signal. This is one reason why isolated horses are typically more reactive, more prone to anxiety, and more difficult to train: they are doing threat-assessment without the social architecture their nervous system was built to rely on.
