Conflict behaviour — behavioural expression arising when an animal faces two or more competing motivations that cannot be simultaneously satisfied, or when it is unable to perform a behaviour it is motivated to perform. In horses, common conflict behaviours include tail-swishing, ear-pinning, head-tilting, teeth-grinding, irregular rhythm, resistance to rein contact, explosive or unpredictable movement, and 'napping'. These are not disobedience. They are signals.
Conflict behaviour is one of the most important concepts in equine welfare science because it sits at the boundary between what we see and what is actually happening. A horse that resists the rein is typically described in training terms: it is 'above the bit', 'behind the bit', 'not through', 'not accepting'. These are descriptions of the biomechanical output. They say nothing about what is generating it. The generating factor may be pain, fear, confusion, physical inability, or the simultaneous activation of competing motivations that the horse cannot resolve.
The most common conflict in the ridden horse is the simultaneous demand to go forward and the simultaneous restriction of that forward movement through rein pressure. The horse is driven by leg and held by hand. Both signals are applied at the same time. The horse cannot satisfy both. It is being asked to do something contradictory, and the conflict behaviour that results — tension, irregularity, resistance — is the horse's behavioural expression of an impossible situation.
Conflict behaviour is a signal worth reading rather than a problem to be corrected. In the Teleonomic Fulfilment framework, conflict behaviour is understood as an indicator that the horse's motivational system is under stress — that it is facing demands it cannot resolve, that its agency is being blocked, or that it is in pain. A training system that responds to conflict behaviour by increasing pressure is a system that is misreading its most important feedback.
